Kolkata : The city of Joy .

Kolkata, the city of joy, holds a special place in my heart, especially since it became the destination for my higher education back in 2008. Little did I know back then that this city would capture my soul and leave a lasting impression. Allow me to share what I truly love about Kolkata,

The best aspect of Kolkata city is its affordability. Whether it's finding accommodation in a PG, enjoying a meal, using transportation services, or indulging in shopping, everything is available at reasonable prices.

When it comes to meals, Kolkata offers unbeatable affordability. You can find incredibly cheap options, with meals available for as low as 10 rupees. Indulge in a delicious breakfast of luchi and allu dam for just 5 rupees, and savor the taste of a steaming cup of kullad chai for as little as 2.50 rupees. The city's remarkable affordability truly makes it a haven for food lovers on a budget.

If you are a foodie, then Kolkata is a haven for you. Kolkata's love for food is legendary, and rightly so.

I indulged in mouthwatering street food delicacies like puchka, chowmein, crispy aloo tikki, flavorful momos, satisfying samosas, and delightful bread omelettes. This city is renowned for its wide variety of sweets, including the iconic rasgulla and sondesh. However, one of my personal favorites has to be the heavenly misti doi, a sweet yogurt treat that is simply irresistible.

I appreciate the diverse transportation options available in Kolkata. The city offers a comprehensive range of transport communication, including buses, taxis, shared autos, the metro, trams, and rickshaws. It's impressive to see such a variety of choices to navigate the city.

Even though all modes of transportation are convenient, I can't help but feel a sense of compassion for the manual rickshaw pullers. It's disheartening to see them exerting physical effort and carrying our load while running. Their dedication and hard work are truly remarkable, and it reminds us to appreciate their contribution to the city's transport system.

I share your enthusiasm for the vibrant shopping streets in Kolkata, particularly during the year 2008. The city indeed boasts a plethora of popular shopping destinations that offer a unique and diverse shopping experience.

Gariahat Market, Hatibagan Market, New Market, College Street, Burrabazar, City Center Shopping Mall, and South City Mall are well-known hubs that cater to different preferences and budgets. These bustling markets and malls offer a wide array of products, ranging from traditional clothing, accessories, books, electronics, household items, and much more.

It's remarkable to witness the bustling energy and the abundance of options available for shoppers. Exploring these markets provides an opportunity to engage with local vendors, discover unique items, and experience the rich cultural heritage of Kolkata.

While reflecting on the shopping scene of 2008, it's fascinating to imagine how the city has evolved over the years. Kolkata's ability to embrace modern shopping malls while maintaining the charm of its traditional markets is one of the many reasons why it remains a favorite destination for shoppers.

The spirit of Durga Pujo in Kolkata is truly captivating. During this time, Kolkata truly comes alive with vibrant energy, exuberance, and a festive atmosphere. The entire city seems to be immersed in celebration, and one can feel the pulsating rhythm of joy in the air. It's a time when the city sheds its everyday routine and embraces the magic of celebration.

The streets are adorned with beautiful decorations, magnificent pandals (temporary structures to house the goddess Durga), and dazzling lights that illuminate the night sky. Each neighborhood competes to create the most elaborate and artistic pandals, showcasing their creativity and devotion.

People from all walks of life come together to revel in the festivities. Locals and visitors alike adorn themselves in traditional attire, with women dressed in colorful sarees and men in dhotis and kurta. The sound of dhak (traditional drums) and the beats of dhaak (a large traditional drum) fill the air, accompanying the enchanting rhythms of cultural performances and dances.

Pandals are the epicenter of the celebrations, where elaborate idols of Goddess Durga and her divine entourage are displayed. People flock to these pandals to offer prayers, seek blessings, and admire the exquisite craftsmanship. The atmosphere is filled with devotion, music, and the aroma of incense.

Yes, the vibrant celebrations during Durga Pujo certainly contribute to Kolkata's reputation as the "City of Joy."

However, it's important to note that Kolkata's reputation as the "City of Joy" extends beyond just the Durga Pujo festivities. The city is known for its rich cultural heritage, literary history, intellectual pursuits, love for art and music, and the warmth and hospitality of its people. The moniker "City of Joy" encompasses the overall essence of Kolkata, its cultural vibrancy, and the joyous spirit that permeates the city throughout the year.

Living in Kolkata for three years, I can confidently say that it truly lives up to its reputation as the "City of Joy." During my time there, I experienced the vibrant culture, the warm hospitality of its people, and the unique charm that sets Kolkata apart.

One of the things that struck me the most was the incredible zest for life that resonates throughout the city. From the passionate discussions in tea-stalls to the lively cultural events, Kolkata embraces art, literature, and intellectual pursuits with a fervor that is inspiring.

The city's deep-rooted history and cultural heritage are evident at every turn. Walking through the streets, I was captivated by the beautifully adorned buildings, magnificent architecture, and the enduring legacy of Bengali literature and art. The iconic Howrah Bridge and the majestic Victoria Memorial stand as proud symbols of Kolkata's rich past.

Lastly, Kolkata's unwavering spirit and resilience cannot be overlooked. Despite its share of challenges, the city continues to radiate optimism and a love for life.

My three years in Kolkata were a journey filled with delightful surprises, cherished memories, and a profound appreciation for the city's unique character. Kolkata will always hold a special place in my heart as the "City of Joy," where happiness and cultural vibrancy intertwine to create an unforgettable experience.
